Casement windows, sometimes called crank windows, are swinging windows. Hinges run along one side of the window and a crank allows you to open and close it as desired. Casements provide several benefits, making them a good choice for a replacement window.

1. Increased Security

Traditional double-hung and slider windows can be pried open with a crowbar quite easily by a determined intruder. Casement windows are much more difficult to force open. Due to their outward opening mechanism, the proper leverage to force the window is difficult to achieve. The crank system also makes it so the window won't just swing open when forced, since without the crank the opening arm effectively holds the window closed.

2. Fewer Air Leaks

Casement windows crank closed tightly, sitting within the frame snug so there are no air leaks around the perimeter. As long as the weather seal is in good condition you should never worry about energy loss from air leaks. Further, insulated double and triple pane windows are less prone to failure. There is no way to slam a casement window closed, so the chances of rattling glass and damage that allows the insulating gas to escape from between the panes are rare.

3. Simple to Use

Double-hung windows can be difficult for some to use. The heavy window may be too much for younger people or those with mobility issues to lift, for example. The windows may also stick in the frame or be in an awkward area that makes it difficult to get proper leverage. Casement windows are opened with a crank that can be turned by almost anyone easily. Some even have removable cranks, which makes it impossible for a young child to open the window when they shouldn't.

4. Easy Cleaning

It's possible to clean casement windows from one side of the home. From the ground floor, all you need to do is crank the window open so you can clean both the inside and the outside of the glass at the same time. No running in and out of the house to get that streak you missed. This saves you time and energy.

5. Bigger Views

Views can seem much bigger with casement windows. Unlike double-hung windows, which cut the window into two parts, a casement window is one large piece of glass. This gives the benefits of a picture window, but one you can open. The large opening also lets in more of a breeze, which can make your home comfortable and cooler.
